HMI + LCD
Kitchen Range example
2016
The touch LCD and the HMI (Human Machine Interface) works together to bring an array of functions and shortcuts, optimized to improve the usability of kitchen range appliances. The HMI primarily served limited but frequently used functions, while the LCD provided multiple open ended functions to meet users contextual needs.
UX + UI + ID + more
Kitchen Range example
2016
Working in an environment where 'software and manufacturing' go hand in hand is quite different from 'software only'. It was extremely crucial that all design teams (UX + UI + ID + Motion) worked in tandem with engineering (software + chip + hardware) in order to meet the product launch timelines.

Button usability
Wall Oven example
2016
The large buttons were designed with consideration of visibility of the food image while still being able to clearly read and make an easy selection within the white space. As seen in this example, we carefully crafted the UI with 'Assisted cooking' features which came with preconfigured oven settings, so the user could spend their time on other things that may be more important to them.
Favorites menu
Microwave example
2016
We arrived at the favorites menu and its layout after running several qualitative interviews with the users conducted at Whirlpool's highly sophisticated usability labs. While this UI was ever so slightly different, the majority of its look and feel was consistent with the rest of the interface so that the user are not overwhelmed with need to learn new UI patterns.

Idle Clock
Microwave example
2016
There was a lot of design and usability research over the 'Idle clock'. We wanted it simple, not overpowering and just visible enough when the user wanted to know the time.
Progress bars
Microwave example
2016
We used clean contrasts from our color palette to visually convey the progress bar with a quick glimpse. It was equally important to tone down the rest of the UI but also provide additional cues, like the 'percentage completed' and 'time remaining'. We also included accessibility options to serve varying needs with color contrast.
